Minorities in the United States World War II
World War II demanded sacrifices from all Americans. Men went to war while the women stepped up, taking their places in factories. Women did more than work in factories they were spies, volunteer military, and code breakers. Other minorities groups did their parts as well. African American men and women served, even though society continued to discriminate and segregate. Navajo Native Americans create a secret code while facing discrimination. Mexicans who came to America to help with the labor shortage, with the promise of good, safe employment only to face prejudice along with terrible working conditions. Japanese Americans wanted to serve their country but their fellow citizens were too afraid of them, so they spent the war years in internment camps. In this guide, you will find information for high school students to use for researching the struggles of minorities during World War II.
