Web 2.0 Projects - a Celebration of Student Learning
Tab 0 -- Introduction
Introduction
From East Middle School in Grand Junction, Colorado...a sampler of student projects and products created with a variety of Web 2.0 Tools and Toys. Enjoy!
Tabs open with a student project, subtabs (more projects) are shown as blue links at the top of the page.
The Blogs O' Persuasion is a collaborative project with BeckyJohnson, School Librarian; Ashley Doss, Bryan Smith, and Ann Hanson, 6th grade Literacy teachers, and…141 6th grade students from East Middle School in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Blogs O' Persuasion are a set of blogs devoted to 6th grade student viewpoints on a variety of controversial topics. We are using blogging as the platform for students to share their persuasive writing with other students, teachers, and the world! We would welcome any comments for the students’ posts, so please let them know what you think. The skills and knowledge that we are addressing through this project are:
Evaluating websites and other online resources to gather research and data to support their persuasive position on a topic
Collaborating with others and sharing research sources – we used a Google Form to gather sources and posted all the useful links in the Link Library of each blog
Writing persuasively!
Writing in a digital space. We taught the students how to use hypertext as linktribution and as a means of enriching the readers’ experience. Some students also learned how to add CC licensed images to their posts and give proper attribution.
Being good digital citizens. We taught the students about using comments appropriately to communicate with their peers about their posts.
I love Shea's blog. He is the quintessential voice of 8th grade male. I am hopeful that he continues to blog even though the Technology Enrichment class (E-Time) has ended.

Tab 2 -- VoiceThread
Noah's Geometry VoiceThread
Noah's math class took a field trip to downtown Grand Junction to find Geometry. They took digital photos and then used VoiceThread to explain and illustrate the Geometry concepts they found.

Subtab 0 -- Mummification by Julia and Rhiannon
Julia and Rhiannon's VoiceThread
A nice example of how VoiceThread can be used to demonstrate a step-bystep process. And Barbie makes a great mummy!

Tab 3 -- Wikis
EMS Digital Poetry Wiki
The EMS Digital Poetry Wiki is an example of a "showcase" wiki. It has been growing since 2008 when I first taught a Digital Poetry enrichment class, and I add to it as students create new works. Be sure to check out the "Poem in Your Pocket" page. Students read their poems and used their cell phones to make mp3 recordings in drop.io.

Subtab 0 -- ecocheetahwiki - home
EcoCheetah Wiki
The EcoCheetah Wiki is a collaborative Library research project for 7th grade science students. Each group of students is responsible for researching a threatened ecosystem and designing wiki page to present their research findings.

Tab 4 -- Ning
Scientist Space Ning
In the pink box at right, clicking on "click here to go to the original site" or the URL at the top of the frame will take you to Scientist Space Ning.
In Scientist Space Ning, 8th grade students created a social networking page for their chosen scientist. Together with their group members, they created content using a variety of Web 2.0 tools. Adopting the voice of the scientists they studied, they collaborated with their peers to blog about and comment on the lives of scientists who changed (and are still influencing) history. Click on the "Members" tab to see all the very notable persons in Scientist Space.
Note: as of May 1st, 2010, this is still a work in progress – so check back often!

Tab 5 -- Animoto
Theron's Native American Animoto
This Animoto was created for
an Immigration research project in the Library. Theron's heritage is
Native American, so he chose to do his project about North America's first
immigrants.
Phoebe chose Animoto to portray her digital life. Carefully chosen photos (her own and creative commons licensed) and words relate her digital world in a sensory way.
Animoto is a natural fit for digital poetry. The text frames allow for 30 character titles and 20 character subtitles, which forces the writer to choose each word very carefully.

Tab 6 -- Photopeach
Erika's PhotoPeach - 13 Reasons Why
In this blog post, Keira uses PhotoPeach to make a wonderful book trailer. The cc licensed photo attributions are in the sidebar of her blog.
Xtranonormal is an amazing animation program that turns typing into speech and allows the creator to animate characters with camera angles, gestures, facial expressions, and as you will see, dance moves. In this Xtranormal movie, Einstein raps about relativity, busts a move, and expresses remorse that his theories led to the development of the atomic bomb.

Subtab 0 -- Just Another Vaccine Test
Jonas Salk - Just Another Vaccine Test
Here, Andy's portrayal of Jonas Salk does quite a good job of explaining Salk's vaccine trials and also demonstrates an awareness of HIPPA laws ;-)
