Fireplace Remodeling

The fireplace is the focal point of your home. It is the first thing that people notice when they walk into your living room. Yet many of us have bought homes that were built in the 50s, 60s, and 70s with dated or odd looking fireplaces.

This binder provides a brief introduction to remodeling your fireplace.

Tab 2 -- Things to Consider

Consider the following before starting your fireplace remodel:

What is the style of your house?
What other materials are in your house (for example, granite, painted wood, tile, etc.)
What style do you like?
What future remodeling plans do you have and what materials are you planning on using?

Tab 3 -- Mantels

Mantels

Mantels can be purchased or custom made. Stock or premade mantels work well on fireplaces that have very standard proportions. If you try to put a stock mantel on a fireplace with non-standard proportions, it looks very strange.

It is important to check with your local building office before installing mantels. There are codes that regulate how far any flammable material must be from the firebox.

Surround Materials

Surround materials can be anything from tile, to solids slabs, to stucco. It is important to check with your local building office before installing surrounds so that you make the surround the proper size.
