My Addiction - Japanese Maples

I had been warned that you "can't buy just one". But I thought that warning was for other people. I thought, "I'm a garden designer, not a collector. I'm strong, it can't happen to me. I build the design and only incorporate plants that fit."

But I was wrong. Recently I find myself sneaking home from the garden show or the nursery with a tiny little plant in my hands, trying desperately to find a spot for it in my garden.

My only consolation is that my neighbor is now hooked too. I watch as more and more are added to her garden and wonder, "When will it stop?"

Bloodgood

It all started innocently enough with this one Bloodgood about tenyears ago. It was about 3' when I planted it, now it is about 14' x 14'.

The Bloodgood looked a little lonely, so I picked up this one to keep it company.

It turns the most fabulous colors, starting in the spring with a bright red, changing to green in summer and a beautiful scarlet in fall.

I don't remember what I paid for it, but I remember it being a lot.

Once or twice a year, Costco will have a handful of Japanese Maples. They are mostly unnamed.

This one was the unfortunate victim of an inexperienced gardener. Three years later, and it is just starting to get its shape back.

Every tiny spot in my garden has a Japanese maple. There are three along this path.

One that I picked up at the San Francisco Garden show, a Garnet that I got from somewhere, and a third from my neighbor who starts them from seed (not an easy process).

Coral Bark Maple

This is a beautiful maple. The bark is coral colored and it turns golden in the fall then red.

Yes, this is over the fence because I planted it in my neighbor's yard. They have no fence, so it has some deer protection around it.

This was a recent nursery purchase. It is a tiny little thing, but I really have no where to put it. It looks just like the last one that I bought, but thankfully, a friend bought a new house and I gave it to her as a house warming gift.

But really, I can stop any time...
